Opening of Aleksanterinkatu Christmas Street 2015
The Christmas season traditionally begins in Helsinki with the opening of the Christmas Street, which takes place this year on Sunday 22 November.
The opening ceremonies include the eagerly anticipated switching on of the Christmas lights along Aleksanterinkatu.
The event begins at 2pm at Senate Square with a charity market where visitors can find Christmas treats, such as mulled wine and pastries.
Visitors will also be entertained by Finnish singers Diandra and Pepe Willberg, who will perform on the steps of the cathedral. The concert will be hosted by none other than Pippi Longstocking, who is celebrating her 70th birthday this year and will appear together with Doll Maddalena.
Santa Claus and Mayor Jussi Pajunen will arrive at Senate Square aboard a historic tram and switch on the Christmas lights.
After that a Christmas Parade will proceed along the streets Aleksanterinkatu, Mannerheimintie and Pohjoisesplanadi, where visitors will have the chance to see Santa and enjoy the Christmas atmosphere.
